The Manuscript

  • Novelty & scope: The manuscript must contribute to neuroscience/neurology-related science/technology and its technological applications.
  • Originality: Has never been published and is not in the process of being published in another journal.
  • Peer review: JOSTEN uses double-blind peer review. Make sure the main file of the manuscript is anonymous (author's name, affiliation, acknowledgments, etc.). Author identities are provided only in a separate Title Page.
  • Research ethics: For human/animal subjects, it is mandatory to include ethical approval (IRB number & institution/Ethics Committee) and an informed consent statement if relevant.
  • Data availability: Include a Data Availability Statement (public repository link or “available upon reasonable request to the corresponding author”).
  • Conflict of interest & funding: Explicitly state conflicts of interest and funding information in a specific section.
  • Similarity check: All manuscripts are screened for similarity / originality. Manuscripts with excessive similarity may be rejected before review.

General Guide for Manuscripts

  • Language: Standard and clear Indonesian or English.
  • Length of manuscript (excluding references, tables, and images):
  • Original Research: 4,000–7,000 words
  • Systematic Review / Meta-analysis: 6,000–9,000 words
  • Case Report: 1,500–2,500 words
  • Short Communication / Technical Note: 1,500–3,000 words
  • Abstract: 250–300 words. Manuscripts should be written in Indonesian. Provide 3–10 keywords.
  • Units & notations: Use SI units. Use standard statistical notation (mean ± SD, median [IQR], p-value, CI, n).
  • Software & code: Mention the exact software / library / device version. When available, include repository link or DOI.
  • Reporting standards: Follow the appropriate EQUATOR guideline(s): CONSORT (clinical trial), STROBE (observational study), PRISMA (systematic review), CARE (case report), ARRIVE (animal research), etc.

Template of Manuscript

  • Use the official JOSTEN manuscript template (.docx / .tex) available on the JOSTEN OJS page under Submissions → Author Guidelines / Templates.
  • The template already defines page size, heading styles, section order, and citation style.
  • Title Page (separate file): Full manuscript title; each author's full name (without academic title), affiliation, country, correspondence email, ORCID iD, funding statement, and conflict of interest statement.

Structure of the Manuscript

File sequence during submission:

  • Title Page (separate file that contains the authors’ identities and affiliations)
  • Main Manuscript (anonymous). The Main Manuscript should include:
  • Concise and informative title
  • Abstract and keywords
  • Introduction
  • Methods (study design, location/time, subjects and inclusion/exclusion criteria, sample size, procedure / instruments / tools, statistical analysis, ethical approval)
  • Results and Discussion (key findings, comparison with literature, strengths & limitations, implications)
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgments
  • References
  • Tables (if multiple, they may be placed after the References section in the same file)
  • Figures / Images (each figure should also be uploaded separately as a high-resolution file)
  • Attachments / Additional Materials (optional; e.g. supplementary data, questionnaire, code)

General Writing Format

  • Paper size: A4.
  • Margins: Top 3.75 cm; Bottom 1.6 cm; Left 1.27 cm; Right 1.27 cm.
  • Font: Palatino Linotype, 12 pt (or a closely equivalent serif font if Palatino Linotype is unavailable).
  • Line spacing: single (1.0). First-line paragraph indent: 0.5 cm. Text alignment: justified (left-right flat alignment).
  • Layout: One-column layout. A wide table or figure may span the full page width if needed.
  • Page numbering: Bottom-right corner.
  • Numbers: Use a period for decimals (e.g. 3.14) and a comma for thousands (e.g. 1,000) following international scientific style.
  • Medical terms and abbreviations: Use standard terminology. Abbreviations must be written in full at first mention.

Specific Writing Format

  • Title: Use sentence case; avoid unexplained abbreviations.
  • Author names & affiliations (in the Title Page only, not in the Main Manuscript): List authors by contribution order. If there are multiple affiliations, indicate them using numeric superscripts. Include full institutional address and country.
  • Abstract: For Original Research, a structured abstract is encouraged (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions). Do not include citations in the abstract.
  • Methods: Provide enough detail for replication, including instruments, device models, software/library versions, statistical tests, and dataset DOI if applicable.
  • Ethics: Clearly state the ethics approval number, the approving institution / Ethics Committee / IRB, and whether informed consent was obtained (especially for identifiable patient data or images).
  • Results: Present the main findings clearly in text. Support them with tables or figures. Avoid repeating the exact same numbers excessively in text, tables, and figures.
  • Discussion: Interpret the findings, compare with prior studies, describe limitations, and suggest directions for future work.
  • Conclusion: Short and directly based on the presented results.
  • Acknowledgments: Mention non-author contributors (technical support, statistical help, data collection, permissions). Do not list anyone as an author here.

Tables and Figures

  • Tables:
  • Use sequential numbering: Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, ...
  • Each table must have a clear title placed above the table.
  • Explanations, definitions of abbreviations, and notes should be placed in a table note under the table.
  • Tables must be understandable on their own without referring back to the text.
  • Avoid vertical lines in the table. Use footnote symbols (a, b, c) or superscripts if needed.
  • Figures:
  • Use sequential numbering: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, ...
  • Each figure must include a caption under the figure.
  • Format & resolution: Upload high-quality images separately. TIFF / PNG / JPEG are accepted. Minimum 300 dpi for photographs/halftone images, and ≥600 dpi for line drawings/diagrams. Vector graphics such as SVG/EPS are strongly recommended for schematics and plots.
  • Display size: Single-column width is approximately 90 mm. Full-page width is approximately 180 mm. Ensure that all text in the figure (axis labels, legends) remains legible at the intended final size.
  • Copyright / permissions: If you reuse previously published figures, include written permission from the copyright holder and acknowledge the source in the caption.
  • Color & accessibility: Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning. Use patterns, symbols, or direct labeling to remain accessible to readers with color vision deficiency.

Indexing of Subjects and Authors

  • Keywords / Subject Index: Select 3–10 specific keywords that reflect the core scientific content (for example, "neurodegenerative", "EEG", "machine learning", "brain-computer interface"). Use standardized/controlled vocabulary when available.
  • Author Index: Ensure consistent spelling of each author's name across publications. Include each author's ORCID iD to improve indexing accuracy.
  • Affiliation & country: Provide complete institutional affiliation and country for all authors to support international indexing.

Citation Style – IEEE

JOSTEN uses IEEE citation style. Citations in the text must appear as bracketed numbers, for example [1], [2], [3], in the order they first appear. Do not use author–year style such as "(Siregar, 2024)".

  • Single source: "...as reported in [1]."
  • Multiple sources (non-consecutive): "...as shown in [2], [5]."
  • Multiple sources (consecutive range): "...widely discussed in [4]–[7]."
  • Narrative form: "According to Siregar [1], ..."
  • Direct quotation with page: "…specific sentence…" [1, p. 15].

Each source cited in the text must appear in the References list. The numbering in the References list must match the order of appearance in the manuscript. Do not reorder alphabetically.
